Perennial, rhizomatous herbs with leafy stems. Inflorescence terminal, pendulous (in ours), with bracts each subtending few to many flowers in a cincinnus. Calyx with 3 lobes. Staminodes as long as or longer than corolla lobes; staminodial lip united with fertile stamen to form a tube. Ovary 1-locular. Fruit a capsule. Seeds with an aril. Derivation of name: from galoba an Ambonese (Indonesian) word for ginger. Worldwide: 35 species in E Asia and Indomalesia Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
