Description of the genus

Dioecious trees. Leaves alternate, pinnate-veined, petiolate: stipules present. Flowers axillary or terminal in large conspicuous spiciform racemiform cymes, 1-several flowers subtended by a bracteole (ochreola). Fruit a trigonous achene with a persistent floral tube, the outer perianth lobes enlarged into wings.

Worldwide: 18 species in tropical America

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
