Description of the genus

Large, mostly erect, stems usually massed together in compact clumps. Flowers in a few species on leaf-bearing stems, normally on leafless stems, which die after the seed is ripe. Several species flower annually. Scales absent. Caryopsis with a thick pericarp narrowed into the persistent base of the style.

Worldwide: c. 35 species from India and Sri Lanka to China and the Philippines

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
