Description of the genus

Monoecious trees, with milky latex. Leaves alternate, stipulate, long-petiolate, trifoliate; petiole with an apical gland; leaflets petiolate, entire, penninerved; stipules small. Inflorescences axillary, subtended by leaves or bracts, paniculate; bracts small, entire. Calyx ovoid or globose in bud, 5-lobed, the lobes valvate; petals absent. Fruit large, trigonous, septicidally dehiscent into 3. Seeds large, oblong-ovoid, smooth, blotched.

Worldwide: 10 Species, from South America, one widely cultivated.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
