Derivation of name: from Greek: kopros meaning dung, osme, smell, alluding to the foetid odour of some species.

Worldwide: c. 90 species in New Guinea, Australia and the Pacific Islands with the greatest diversity in New Zealand.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
