Description of the genus

Small dioecious tree to 5 m. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate; petiole up to 2.5 cm; rhachis strongly winged: leaflets in 2-5 pairs plus a terminal, 1.5-6 × 0.5-2.5 cm, narrowly elliptic, glabrous, dark shiny green; margin entire, rolled under. Inflorescence of dense terminal branched heads. Calyx with petal-like, bright pink or red lobes; petals creamy-white. Fruit 4 mm in diameter, embedded in the persistent bright sepals, the outer ‘skin’ a sticky tar-like substance.

Derivation of name: from the Greek loxos meaning crooked or oblique and Latin stylis style, referring to the lateral attachment of the style to the ovary.

Worldwide: South Africa (Cape Province to KwaZulu-Natal).

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
