Perennial herbs, with rhizomes. Leaves distichous, mostly basal. Stems terete to flattened, often strongly winged. Inflorescences composed of 2-nate rhipidia, these 1-many. Flowers actinomorphic, blue, lasting one morning only, twisting spirally as they go over, deliquescent. Tepals free ± to base, spreading horizontally. Fruit a capsule. Worldwide: 50 species in tropical and South Africa and Madagascar Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
