Description of the genus

Small trees, shrubs, often climbing or lianes. Flowers solitary or in condensed cymes, extra-axillary; peduncles hooked or zigzag. Bracts and bracteoles small, caducous. Sepals 3. Petals 6, in two whorls, free. Stamens numerous, oblong or wedge-shaped. Carpels 6-numerous, free. Ripe carpels indehiscent, cylindric or ellipsoid, stipitate, succulent. Seeds vertical; aril 0.

Worldwide: 100 species in the Old World tropics
