Description of the genus

Trees or (in ours) climbing or sprawling shrubs, bearing recurved prickles. Stipules small or 0. Leaves 2-pinnate; specialised glands on petiole or rhachis 0. Leaflets opposite. Inflorescence of racemes, often aggregated in a panicle, terminal or axillary. Calyx with short tube and longer lobes. Petals 5. Stamens 10, longer than petals. Pod an indehiscent, flattened, red samara with an oblique-oblong wing.

Derivation of name: from the Greek pteron (wing) and lobion (pod).

Worldwide: 11 species in the tropics of the Old World (one species in Africa)
