Description of the genus

Dioecious shrubs or trees. Leaves imparipinnate. Leaflets entire. Flowers (4-)5-merous, unisexual (but with little external difference between the sexes) borne in contracted panicles. Petals (4-)5, free. Staminal tube cup-shaped, filaments completely fused or ± so, without appendages; anthers usually 10, inserted on the rim of the staminal tube. Ovary 2-5(-6)-locular. Fruit a drupe with 2-4(-6), 1-seeded pyrenes.

Derivation of name: In honour of Captain Carl Gustaf Ekeberg, a pharmacist, surgeon and correspondent of Linnaeus

Worldwide: 4 species in tropical and South Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
