Description of the genus

Monoecious trees. Leaves 1-paripinnate. Inflorescence a raceme-like thyrse. Flowers functionally unisexual. Sepals 5. Petals 0. Stamens 6-8. Ovary 3-locular; each loculus with 1 ovule. Fruit of (1-)2-3 cocci which are dorsally longitudinally dehiscent. Arillode present, surrounding the seed.

Derivation of name: for Jean Frédéric Stadtmann, 1762–1807, a French doctor, botanist, and draftsman who worked in the Mascarene Islands

Worldwide: 2 species in tropical eastern and southern Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarenes

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
