Notes: In distinguishing between this species and the similar Bocconia frutescens, we have used the leaf characters in the key written by J. Cullen in volume IV of the European Garden Flora (Walters, S.M. et al. (eds) (1995)), which are as follows:
  1. Leaves long-tapered at the base, appearing to have a winged stalk ... arborea
  2. Leaves rounded or abruptly tapered at the base, stalk not appearing winged ... frutescens
Derivation of specific name: arborea: tree-like

Worldwide distribution: Native of Central America
Growth form(s): Tree, shrub over 2 m.
