Common names:
Description: Robust herbaceous shrub to 3 m tall with erect or ascending stems. Leaves petiolate: lamina elliptic to ovate, pubescent to lanate with red sessile glands, succulent, soft, often variegated in cultivated specimens, with green and variegated leaves sometimes on the same plant; margin serrate or crenate. Inflorescence lax with c. 10 whorls of 5-7 flowered cymes. Corolla 8-26 mm long, blue or purple.
Notes: This species is widely cultivated as a garden ornamental and is occasionally naturalised as an escape.
Derivation of specific name: barbatus: bearded; grandis: of great size, referring to this variety being taller than var. barbatus.
