Description of the genus

Leaves erect. Inflorescence compound, pyramidal; flowers and branches in whorls of 4 or more, each whorl subtended by 3 bracts and several smaller bracteoles. Flowers bisexual. Sepals 3, appressed in fruit. Petals 3, longer than the sepals. Stamens 6. Carpels many, free. Achenes many, in a whorl, flattened laterally, ridged abaxially.

Derivation of name: an ancient Greek name for water-plantain.

Worldwide: 9 species in northern temperate zones and Australia.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
