Description of the genus

Trees and shrubs. Stipules 0 or soon caducous. Leaves not clustered at ends of branches. Flowers borne in axils of current leaves, pedicellate. Sepals 8, in two slightly dissimilar whorls of 4. Corolla of 8 deeply 3-lobed petals, joined in a short tube at the base. Stamens 8, anthers relatively large (2.5 mm or more). Fruit a 1-several-seeded berry with persistent basal calyx.

Worldwide: 20-30 species, centered in tropical Africa but extending to tropical Asia

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
