Description of the genus

Perennial vines or sub-shrubs, glabrous. Leaves opposite. Inflorescences umbel-like, cymes or umbels. Calyx 5-partite, small. Flowers small or moderate-sized. Corolla campanulate, often constricted at the throat; 5 wart-like fleshy lobes with basal parts adnate to the staminal column. Fruit paired follicles with a thick pericarp, smooth, sometimes winged. Seeds crowned with a tuft of hairs.

Worldwide: C. 20 species in the Old World tropics.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
