Description of the genus

Large perennial herbs or (in ours) shrubs. Leaves very large, simple, covered with sticky hairs; margin dentate. Inflorescence of terminal scorpioid cymes. Flowers sessile. Calyx deeply lobed. Corolla 5-lobed, violet. Stamens exserted. Ovary 1-locular. Styles 2. Fruit a capsule, dehiscing by 2 valves.

Derivation of name: Named after Johannes Wigand, 1523-1587, Prussian bishop and writer on plants.

Worldwide: 2-3 species in tropical America

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
