Description of the genus

Small shrubs to trees. Stipules triangular at base, lobed. Leaves drying blackish-brown; domatia present; tertiary venation obscure. Inflorescences umbellate or 1-flowered, entirely enclosed in bud by paired connate bracts. Corolla: throat densely congested with hairs; lobes spreading or reflexed. Ovary 2-10-locular with 1 pendulous ovule per loculus. Pollen-presenter solid with style attached to the base. Fruit red to yellow, obcordate in side view.

Worldwide: c. 45 species in Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius and Rodrigues.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
