Description of the genus

Perennial or rarely annual. Inflorescence an open panicle (in ours). Spikelet 2-flowered with a rhachilla-extension consisting of a minute bristle. Glumes ± equal, as long as the spikelet. Callus obtuse. Lemmas 5-9(-11)-nerved, pilose on the back; apex 2-lobed bearing an awn from the sinus and a bristle from the inner side of each lobe.

Worldwide: c.80 species; mainly South African but a few extending northwards to Yemen and 3 species in Madagascar

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
