Description of the genus
Annual, possibly sometimes perennial herbs, frequently glandular and aromatic. Stems not winged. Leaves alternate. Inflorescence of terminal panicles or lax corymbs or capitula solitary in the axils of upper leaves. Capitula campanulate, heterogamous with outer florets female and inner bisexual. Receptacle honeycombed, without scales. Phyllaries numerous, few-many-seriate; outer shorter, inner scarious, all ± linear. Florets purple or mauve (in ours). Anthers tailed. Style 2-fid with acute sweeping hairs not reaching the fork. Achenes oblong, ribbed, pubescent. Pappus of numerous barbellate bristles in 1 row. Worldwide: c. 100 species, mainly in tropical Asia; a few in Australia and Africa Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
