Description of the genus

Perennials. Inflorescence a spike-like panicle with sterile spikelets at the base. Spikelets falling entire, strongly laterally flattened, 2-4(-5)-flowered; lower floret fertile, upper male or barren. Glumes subequal, 1-nerved; lemmas 5-7-nerved in the upper part, 3-nerved below, membranous, shortly awned.

Worldwide: 1-2 species with disjunct distribution in Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and southern Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
