Capitula radiate, rarely discoid; ray florets neuter, rarely female; disk florets bisexual, fertile but inner may be female. Receptacle with scales, which are as long as and envelop the disk florets. Achenes 5-ribbed, glabrous or with a basal tuft of long hairs. Pappus in 1 row, of 5-10 obovate, rounded, scales or in 2 rows, consisting of 5 outer scales and 5 inner bristles or sometimes 0.
