Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence a single terminal raceme or pair of racemes. Spikelets several-flowered, alternate in 2 rows, disarticulating above the glumes but not between the florets; lower 1-5(-7) florets fertile, the remainder progressively smaller and sterile. Glumes persistent, membranous, a little shorter than the lemmas. Lemmas 3-nerved, coriaceous, usually cilate on the lateral nerves, entire or 2-toothed at apex, with a subapical awn.

Worldwide: 6 species in Africa, SW Asia and India.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
