Description of the genus

Shrubs, spreading or straggling, without latex, glabrous; branches lined or angular, sometimes ending in a spine, frequently condensed to form short shoots. Leaves spiral or fasciculate (on short shoots), entire or with margin denticulate, petiolate; stipules free, small, caducous. Inflorescence pedunculate, dichasial or sometimes becoming monochasial, many- to few-flowered, simple, in axils of foliage leaves or in clusters on short shoots; bracts persistent. Flowers pedicellate, with pedicels articulated; sepals (4)5, subequal, imbricate, free or united at the base, with margin finely ciliolate; petals (4)5, white, imbricate in bud, spreading or suberect. Ovary superior. Fruit capsular, coriaceous to woody, without emergences, dehiscing loculicidally to the base. Seeds 6–18, glossy, red-brown, with a laciniate fleshy aril forming a complete covering, with fleshy endosperm.

Worldwide: 2 species in southern Africa.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
