Subshrubby perennials or one annual (alternifolium). Leaves opposite or alternate. Inflorescence corymose. Phyllaries in 3-4 rows. Flowers often showy, with pink to purplish heads. Receptacle strongly conical, without scales, pitted. Achenes elongate with a narrowly stalked base and 5 prominent ribs, the carpopodium expanded in a narrow basal ring. Pappus of barbed bristles arranged in one row.
Derivation of name: from the Greek, kampylos, meaning curved or bent and -clinium from kline, bed or receptacle, alluding to the curved or dome-shaped receptacle of the flower head. Worldwide: 16 species native in tropical Central and South America with one species introduced and considered highly invasive in Southern Africa. Zimbabwe: 1 taxon. |
