Description of the genus

Either rhizomatous or tufted perennials, or slender and grass-like. Stems scapose. Leaves ligulate. Involucral bracts leaf-like or short. Inflorescence a slender to large panicle or a single spike. Main axis with a succession of bracts. Nutlet often beaked.

Worldwide: About 12 species, mainly in southern Africa, a few in Ethiopia and 2 in Madagascar.
