Description of the genus

Perennial herb (in ours), arising from a rhizome. Flowers in terminal or terminal and axillary thyrses, slightly zygomorphic, bisexual. Sepals 3, free. Petals 3, free, blue, purple or white. Stamens 2-3, fertile. Staminodes (0-)3(-4). Ovary 3-locular.

Derivation of name: after Murdan Aly, plant collector and keeper of the herbarium at Saharunpore, India.

Worldwide: c.50 species, in tropical and warm areas.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
