Description of the genus

Perennial dwarf, bulbous herbs. Bulb sub-globose, deep-seated, with an outer covering of thin brown tunics. Leaves 2, contemporary with flowers, flat on the ground, glabrous, acute, often brownish towards the apex, bases enfolding panicle; veins conspicuously sunken. Inflorescence a showy head of up to 10 flowers between the leaves, bracts large clasping flower bases. Flowers brilliant red, orange or yellow, or streaked, unusual scent; irregular with tepals fused below forming a tube. Fruit a triangular capsule, membranous. Seeds round, black, smooth, shiny.

Worldwide: 1 species in northern Cape.
