Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, dying back each year, with corms. Foliage leaves basal, ± filiform, terete or oval in cross-section with 4 longitudinal grooves. Flowers solitary and terminal, sessile, subtended by 2 opposing bracts; tepals united into a tube, ± equal. Flowers actinomorphic, lilac to violet with a white or yellow centre. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: c. 90 species in Europe, the Mediterranean and in southern (especially S.) Africa.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
