Dioecious trees. Leaves alternate, simple, stipulate. Buds with several clearly visible unequal outer scales. Flowers appearing before the leaves, in pendulous catkins, catkin scales toothed or laciniate; each flower with a cup-like disk; stamens 4-many. Derivation of name: the classical name for poplars Worldwide: 35 species in northern temperate regions Zimbabwe: 2 taxa. |
