Description of the genus

Subshrubs or annual or perennial herbs, sometimes becoming woody at base. Leaves sessile or petiolate, alternate, often with fascicles of leaves in axils, filiform or with distinctly broad lamina, sometimes more or less succulent. Inflorescence of terminal and axillary spikes. Flowers actinomorphic, usually in clusters of 3. Bracts solitary, sometimes 3-lobed. Bracteoles sometimes present in pairs. Sepals 4–5, more or less equal, membranous. Fruit subglobose to globose, ridged, muricate or warty. Seed 1; testa dark brown or black.

Worldwide: Three species in southern Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
