Description of the genus

Trees, deciduous; leaves paripinnate, leaflets in 3−6 pairs, fringed with white pubescence; flowers in terminal panicles; bracteoles 2, enclosing the flower bud; petals white 5, small, one larger than the rest; pods held above canopy foliage, brown tomentose, explosively dehiscent, fresh seeds pale pinkish-brown.

Derivation of name: Named after Jules Bernard, a governor of Gabon

Worldwide: 8 species in tropical Africa, 2 species in the Flora Zambesiaca region, 2 species in Zambia.

Zimbabwe: 1 taxon.
