Description of the genus

Unarmed herbs or low shrubs. Stipules fringed, serrate or laciniate. Leaves 2-pinnate, imparipinnate; leaflets opposite. Inflorescences of terminal or leaf-opposed racemes. Flowers bisexual, pink to red. Calyx lobes 5, unequal, the lower larger, ± boat-shaped, enclosing the flower.Petals 5, unequal; upper ± funnel-shaped, others in lateral pairs. Stamens 10. Pods flat, longitudinally dehiscent, often glandular.

Worldwide: 16 species, 9 in N America, 4 in S America and 3 in southern Africa.

Zimbabwe: 2 taxa.
