Description of the genus

Monoecious, rarely dioecious, trees and shrubs. Indumentum simple. Leaves simple, alternate. Inflorescences axillary, fasiculate or in false racemes. Male flowers: sepals 5, valvate; petals 5, minute; disk ring- or cup-shaped; stamens 5; pistillode present. Female flowers: sepals 5, valvate; petals 5, minute; disk enveloping the ovary; ovary (2-)3(-4)-locular; styles 3. Fruit (2-)3(-4)-lobed, splitting into the same number of 2-valved cocci. Seeds 2 per coccus.

Worldwide: c. 140 species in the Old World tropics.

Zimbabwe: 4 taxa.
