Rhizome erect, with a short caudex up to 20 × 6 cm. Fronds large, tufted, arching, firmly herbaceous. Stipe up to 1m long, smooth except for a few scattered, linear, dark brown scales near the base. Lamina bipinnatifid to bipinnate in upper part, tripinnatifid below, up to 1.5m × 0.9m, ovate to roughly elliptic in outline. Pinnules 16-20 pairs, narrowly oblong-acuminate, apex obliquely serrate, base shortly petiolate, truncate, cut 1/4-2/3 to the costa into rectangular, falcate lobes with rounded to bluntly acute apices, margins entire to widely and shallowly crenate, glabrous on both surfaces, veins in 5-8 pairs per lobe, pinnate, bifurcate. Rhachis brown, subglabrous with few scattered, twisted, brown scales, particularly about the pinnule petioles. Sori linear, 2-4 mm long, 6-8 per lobe, basal acroscopic sori frequently arranged back to back; indusium brown, entire, membranous.
Notes: Could be confused with D. zanzibaricum which differs in having smaller and more sori per lobe and a stipe base that is densely set with hair-like scales.

Habitat: Deeply shaded streambanks in montane, evrgreen, wet forests.
