Description:
Stems robust, 1.2 - 3 mm in diameter; leaves 4.5-13.5 × 2-3.7 mm, alternate, occasionally subopposite or even whorled, mostly recurved, thick, opaque; apex acute. Epidermal cells mainly equal-sided; margins with outer row almost translucent, without sclerenchyma fibres, each side with 12-48 teeth; leaf teeth long, sharp, spreading or recurved on broad triangular protuberances; central area narrow, without septa or sclerenchyma fibres. Male inflorescence a spathe with up to 30 flower buds; spathe valves ovate, pale violet or pinkish. Female inflorescence with ovate to narrowly ovate spathe valves; female flower with pale lilac perianth. Capsule ovoid to narrowly ovoid, tapered above.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: ilicifolius: with leaves like an Ilex (holly)
Habitat: Lakes, dams, ponds and rivers, in water up to 3 m deep.
Altitude range: (metres) 500 - 1150 m

Worldwide distribution: Most common in the Zambezian region, namely Angola, DRC, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
