Description:
Tufted annual to short-lived perennial. Culms 40–100 cm. high, geniculately ascending. Leaf laminae 4–16 cm. long, 2–4(5) mm. wide, flat. Panicle 5–12 cm. long, linear in outline. Pedicels glabrous, attached laterally to the base of the spikelet. Spikelets 3.5–5 mm. long, ovate. Inferior glume 0.7–1.5(1.7) mm. long, ovate, separated from the superior by an internode 0.4–0.7(0.9) mm. long; superior glume 5-nerved, gibbous on the back, coriaceous with the nerves slightly raised, without a distinct membranous beak, broadly ovate, emarginate, awned. Inferior floret male, its lemma 5-nerved, resembling the superior glume but less gibbous, the palea ciliate on its keels.
