Description: |
Densely caespitose perennial, often reddish-purple; culms up to 130 cm high, slender, erect, unbranched; internodes terete. Leaves mostly basal, often falcate; sheaths shorter than the internodes, glabrous or thinly pilose with straight hairs; laminas 4.5–24 cm × 1.2–4 mm, flat at the base, involute above, tapering to a fine point. Racemes 5–9 cm long, solitary, glabrous except for a conspicuous ring of 2–4 mm long hairs at the base of the spikelet, long exserted from the linear spatheole, dull purple; peduncles longer than the racemes; internodes and pedicels terete, linear, widened at the apex. Sessile and pedicelled spikelets similar, 5–7.5 mm long, (the pedicelled spikelets 1/3–1/2 as long again as the pedicel), sterile, female or bisexual, linear-ovate, dorsally compressed, flushed with dull purple; inferior glumes slightly convex, entire or occasionally 2-mucronate at the apex; superior lemma of sessile spikelet bifid only at the apex, mucronate or with an awn up to 11 mm long; lemma of pedicelled spikelet awnless or mucronate; anthers 2.5–4 mm long. |
