Description:
Tufted soft-succulent perennial herb. Plants in small clusters, growing from a vertical rhizome. Leaves erect or arching, linear, grass-like, up to 60 cm, broadly winged. Normally 1 flowering stem per plant with a dense many-flowered terminal inflorescence. Fruits black when mature.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: abyssinica: of Abyssinia (Ethiopia)
Habitat: In montane grassland, in shallow soil overlying rock, woodland and along seepage areas, often in small colonies.
Altitude range: (metres) 700 - 2400 m

Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa
