Description:
More or less robust herb, up to 90 cm high, growing from a regularly constricted horizontal rhizome, sometimes forming clumps. Roots wiry, with tubers at the tips. Leaves 3-10 per plant, in 2 rows, narrowly lanceolate, narrowing at the base and clasping the basal part of the peduncle, up to 1 m long but generally shorter in this variety, surface closely ribbed. Peduncle flat and winged, mostly leafless but often with smaller leaf-like bracts below the inflorescence, hairless but scabrid-ciliate on the wings. Inflorescence unbranched or with 2 short branches at the base, moderately densely flowered, up to 13 cm long; pedicels up to 3 per node, 8-11 mm long in fruit,articulated below the middle. Flowers whitish with tepals 9-11 mm long, 5-9-veined, outer tepals often with blackish-reddish tips. Stamens shorter than anthers. Capsule obovoid, shallowly 3-lobed, transfersely ridged.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: milanjianum: of Mt Mulanje in southern Malawi where the type of this taxon was collected.
Habitat: In open woodland, on stony soil and on termite mounds.
