Description:
Slender perennial herb up to 40 cm tall, growing from a more or less cylindrical vertical rhizome, 1.5-3 cm long, ringed in the middle by stout roots. Leaves 3-10, grass-like, 5-45 cm long, linear, strongly ribbed with submarginal veins, finely hairy. Flowering stems 1-3, up to 24 cm long, filiform, more or less flattened or becoming slightly U-shaped, appressed hairy. Flowers 1-5, often appearing before the leaves, 8-14 mm in diameter, appressed hairy. Capsule 2-3 mm long, excluding the persistent perianth, 8 or 12 seeded. Seeds black and glossy.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: filiformis: filiform, thread-like, referring to the flowering scape.
Habitat: Swampy or wet grassland and montane grassland, often after annual fires.

Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Lesotho and Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
