Common names: Large yellow moraea (English)
Status: Native
Perennial herb, 80 - 120 cm tall, growing from a corm, solitary or in clumps. Foliage leaf solitary, much longer than the flowering stem; 1.5 cm wide, sheathing leaves 2-3, often drying brown. Flowers yellow with dark yellow nectar guides on the outer tepals. Outer tepals, 35-50 cm long spreading or reflexed; inner tepals 30-40 mm long, erect.
Notes: There are 3 yellow-flowered species of Moraea in Zimbabwe: Moraea inyangani is a short-stemmed species with much smaller flowers, found only near the summit of Mt Nyangani; Moraea muddii is also more short-stemmed with paler flowers, which in Zimbabwe is found only in the Chimanimani Mountains.
Derivation of specific name: spathulata: spathulate or spoon-shaped, referring to the shape of the inner tepals.
Habitat: In montane, rocky grassland and near the edges of forest.
