Perennial herb, up to 70 cm tall. Leaves 6-10, basal, half as long as the stem; 3-5 short, sheathing leaves along the slightly compressed unwinged and unbranched stem. Flowers in 3-8, 2-4-flowered clusters, together forming a spike-like arrangement, blue. Spathes and bracts with lacerate margins. Capsule 6-10 mm long, ellipsoid-ovoid.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In vleis, along streams and in moist places in submontane grassland.
Altitude range: (metres) 1500 - 2400 m
Flowering time:Nov - Feb
Worldwide distribution: Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa as far as the Eastern Cape.
