Description:
Plant to 80 cm, with membranous corms, becoming fibrous and matted with age. Leaves both basal and cauline. Spike with 5-9 flowers. Upper tepal large, arched, 4.5 - 5.5 cm. Flowers bright red, the lower tepals each with a white to yellow streak; the markings spathulate on the lower lateral tepals. Filaments well exserted; anthers apiculate.
Notes: This species is included in the Zimbabwe flora on the basis of its inclusion in Mapaura and Timberlake (2004). In FZ 12(4), however, it is only recorded from Malawi and Mozambique.

Habitat: In sandy soil, woodland and forest; also on rocky slopes.
