Description:
Herb, 10-60 cm. Leaves linear, grass-like, appearing after flowering. Inflorescence laxly 2-8-flowered. Flowers ± erect, cream or pale pink with a mauve lip or brownish with a purple or purple-green lip. Sepals linear; the dorsal erect, the laterals spreading. Lip 3-lobed; callus of 3 ridges, papillose on the mid-lobe. Spur 7-10 mm long.
Notes: This species flowers very early in the year, well before the onset of the rains.
Derivation of specific name: katangensis: after Katanga, the name of a former province of the DRC.
Habitat: In sparse vegetation in miombo woodland on rocky slopes.
