Description: |
A low tufted herb, with densely-crowded linear basal leaves hiding the stem, sometimes offsetting by means of runners rooting at the nodes. Stems thick, short, erect, persistent, mostly subterranean, branched or unbranched, 1–8 cm long. Basal leaves sessile, with broad membranous bases, linear, 4–90 mm long, strongly 1-veined, hairless, margin entire, often recurved. Flowering stems annual, similar in appearance to the runners, ascending, hairless, solitary or several, 0.5–2.5 mm diameter at the base, with internodes up to 1.5 cm long, leafy, simple or much branched in a divaricate cymose manner, bearing whorls of leaves and flowers at the nodes. Stem-leaves stipulate, sessile, linear or lanceolate, 2–3.5 mm. long, bluish-green. Stipules persistent, linear. Flowers creamy or greenish, pedicellate, in sessile umbelliform cymes clustered at the nodes. Pedicels 2–5 mm long. Sepals 5, broadly ovate, green, with wide membranous margins, 2–2.5 mm long in flower. Fruit a 5-(rarely 3-) lobed capsule, depressed above, splitting into as many triangular valves. |
