Description:	Erect branching annual herb. Leaves 3-foliolate on a long petiole; leaflets linear to lanceolate. Flowers in a terminal inflorescence, mauve with purple markings on the petals, with or without a bright yellow spot on the central petals. Stamens 6-12, all fertile. Fruit a long slender capsule, up to 9 cm.
Notes:	It mainly differs from var. maculatiflora in the wider leaflets, which are often wider than 2mm, and longer capsules. Var. maculatiflora also often occurs at higher altitudes on granite rock. C. macrophylla is also similar to C. maculata, which differs in having some sterile anthers.
