Description: |
Robust, erect perennial, 1-3 m. Stems glaucous, velvety, distinctly angled. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate, dark grey-green above, much paler greyish, below, finely velvety, 7-9-veined from the base; margins serrate. Lower leaves much larger than upper leaves. Flowers in apparent fascicles on short lateral and subterminal shoots, yellow to apricot-orange, opening in the afternoon. Calyx lobes short, less than 6 mm. |
Notes: | This is the most common and widespread variety in Zimbabwe. Var. macrocarpum (Baker f.) Hochr. is restricted to more moist areas in the Eastern Highlands. It has a more yellow-brownish indumentum, distinctly angled flower buds and longer calyx lobes, more than 7 mm long. The large, softly velvety leaves form an excellent emergency supply of toilet paper, when you're stuck in the bush. |
