Description:
Rhizomatous small shrub up to 1 m high, rarely taller, usually flowering just above ground level; bark brown, more or less rough and flaking. Leaves oblong or elliptic to oblanceolate or more rarely obovate, 4–15 cm long, veining prominent above, plane beneath; margin densely more or less curved-glandular-serrulate or more rarely entire; petiole up to 14 mm long. Flowers solitary or in clusters up to 4, often with several clusters together, at the base of current year’s shoots, appearing before the leaves; pedicels 1–2·5 cm long in fruit. Sepals pink, oblong, 5–6 mm long in flower, spreading or reflexed after flowering, becoming crimson-red, broadly oblong, 8–10 mm long, flat and spreading or reflexed in fruit. Petals obovate to narrowly oblanceolate, 6–8 mm. long, white, often tinged pink or with a pink centre line. Carpels 5–7, with styles completely united. Drupelets 6–8 mm wide, compressed.
Notes: This species is easily distinguished when in flower by the white to pinkish flowers. When not in flower the fin-like stipules are characteristic.

Habitat: Deciduous woodland and margins of vleis, on sandy soils.
Altitude range: (metres) 915 - 1675 m

Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, western Tanzania, Zambia,Zimbabwe and northern Namibia.
