Description:
Dwarf suffrutex, growing from a rhizome, up to 0.6 m tall but usually less. Leaves variable, ovate, obovate to lanceolate-elliptic. Flowers often on new growth growing straight from the rhizome. The fruits are edible.
Notes: Although it is consistently very different in habit from other subspecies of S. guineense, which are all trees, most authors agree there is not enough evidence to support claims to treat it as a separate species.
Derivation of specific name: huillensis: of the Huilla region in Angola where this taxon was first collected.
Habitat: A species of open woodland and seasonally waterlogged grassland, often in sandy soils.
Altitude range: (metres) 900 - 1540 m

Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and possibly in Mozambique.
